Central Indiana’s largest bicycle swap meet is back with a new time, more sales space and a secure bicycle sales corral. The CIBA Swap Meet will again offer a great selection and great deals, and helps to support CIBA activities throughout the year.

CIBA partner Freewheelin’ Community Bikes will again be on site to accept donations of used bicycles and gears to benefit their youth programs.

The final order of the latest CIBA Kit will be placed January 2, 2018. Place your order for your jersey, shorts or bibs in the CIBA Store. Merchandise will be custom made by our supplier and shipped directly to you; shipping is included in the price. 

We would like to thank all who volunteered to represent CIBA, to help out at CIBA events and to serve as ride leaders, road captains and mentors on the many rides that CIBA hosts over the year. Incentive points have been entered into the database for the 2016-2017 season. An email was sent to all who received points in 2017 as well as anyone with a balance from last year. If you believe that you should have received points, but did not receive an email, please contact incentives@cibaride.org.

CIBA's Nominating Committee (Alan Rainey, Cheryl Sunman and Marc Walter) are compiling a list of officer and board candidates for 2018. Officers to be elected include: President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. Officer terms are for one year. There are five openings for the CIBA Board of Directors. Two are for a two-year term and three are for three-years. We are still looking for additional candidates, particularly for secretary and the board. Please contact one of the nominating committee if you are interested in running for an officer or board position.

Elections will conclude at the Annual CIBA Pitch-in Dinner and Elections on Saturday, November 11, 2017 at First Congregational Church, 7171 N Pennsylvania St Indianapolis, IN 46240.

Volunteers (particularly for rest stops) are needed October 6-8, 2017 for the 50th Hilly Hundred.

If you can work at least 6 hours, you will get free registration, camping or sleeping bag space, weekend meals at Hilly Headquarters, and a Hilly Helper long sleeve t-shirt.

Good Morning Everyone,

Please take the following commentary preliminary as it is in response to recent information from riders who participated in the CIBA Mass Ave Kickoff Ride. Stories are subject to change but this is how I understand it to date. On Saturday (Aug 5th) there was a nonproductive interaction between a driver of a pickup truck on the south side of Indianapolis and a group of bicyclists who were participating in the CIBA ride. The report I have received indicated that the driver was acting in an unsafe way by passing on a double yellow on a hill. Unfortunately, one of the cyclists on the ride responded with an inappropriate gesture to the driver. From my understanding, this gesture initiated a conflict in which the driver stopped and started to drive backward towards the cyclists causing some to seek safety in the ditch.

I'd like to point out a couple of points and provide some perspective on how we would like people participating in our rides to behave and act.

While the driver initiated the unsafe situation and was not driving in a safe or legal manner likely on purpose, the behavior of the bicyclist is unacceptable. We ride together to take care of each other and share a hobby in which we all enjoy. This bicyclists' actions perpetuated the stereotypes which we fight and placed their peers in a very dangerous situation.  Also, it is possible that this driver will now be even more angry and hostile because of this interaction which could lead to lethal consequences to a cyclist in the future. Additionally, when reporting these experiences with law enforcement this behavior undermines our position. It becomes a case of two grown people acting like children which is not helpful to our cause.

So what does CIBA expect of you? We expect you to ride within the law and to act in a responsible and respectful manner no matter the situation.  Your actions can have impacts on the other people around you as well as people in the future. Unfortunately, these types of interactions will happen and it is best to take the high road. Instead of acting out and placing your fellow bicyclists in danger, lean on your fellow riders to calm you down. If there is a driver breaking the law or causing a dangerous situation please record the license plate and share that information with the ride leader or leadership as soon as possible. It can be useful to get these reports on filed in case of repeat behavior.  We also expect our club members to be empowered and convey this message and the club's expectations to those who may not be aware.

I hope this provides some clarity and some guidance of what culture the club is trying to build as well as what we expect from all the riders who take part in our rides.

Whew! There were some hot ones towards the end of July! It made it very clear that we have had a very mild and enjoyable summer! I hope everything in your world is as smooth as the new road I experienced on my commute in last week! I had an awesome Dad and Kids camping outing which has been going on for 12 years now. One of the Dads made an awesome tagline. "Danger Dads... No Moms, No Rules, Don't Tell. It's exciting and rewarding that the kids still get excited about this annual trip. Having that break brought a newfound desire to put more time into riding and the gym. My mind is fresh and happy and my body is saying "What's happening!!" It's not all that bad though and my body is coming back around fast. Enough about me. You didn't come to read about me right?! So let's talk about some CIBA Happenings...

I'm looking forward to crashing the CIBA women's Mountain Bike Ride at Fort Ben next Wednesday. Our ride leader Kate is fantastic, providing a no judge super friendly atmosphere. It's a new category this year but she's already pulling in up to 15 women each week!

In August we have a couple of big events to think about and partake in. The first which is on the horizon is the Indiana State Fair. For the 17th year, CIBA will partner with Pedal & Park to support bicyclists attending the fair. Our volunteers expect to park ~2000 bicycles over the 16-day event. With great weather like we are having right now, there's a good shot we will beat that number! I'm looking forward to signing up for a few shifts and hope to see you there too!

Next up is our support of the Mass Avenue Criterium. We'll be there hosting a CIBA ride lead by Howard Cohen before the races. Check out the calendar for more information. We will also be hosting a CIBA tent a the Criterium. We'll be looking for people to host the tent and share information about CIBA. It's a great event to chitchat with people and take in a great view of the race!

Although not in August, It's still important to start thinking about the Hilly Hundred. This year will mark the 50th Hilly! There are many exciting aspects this year but in my mind, one of the most exciting is the return across I69! You still have plenty of time to prepare with CIBA rides taking place almost every day of every week! Check left of the blog for the ride schedule. Most important the Hilly Hundred is not a race. With rest stops a-plenty it's meant as a ride to enjoy nature and each other. If 50 miles per day worries is a bit much we will also have a 30 mile per day options. You could also snag one of those volunteer spots where you can work one day and ride one day too so keep that in mind. Make sure to follow CIBA and Hilly Hundred on your favorite social media platform to get the latest info. I volunteer for Hilly whenever I am in town for the event. I've only worked day of registration so I can't speak to other slots but I've always had a fun time.

So plenty of fun activities coming up watch your email and the news blot as things develop!

We will be downtown this weekend supporting The Cultural Trail & Mass Ave Criterium through our morning Kick Off Ride hosted by Howard Cohen.  We will then be hosting a tent sharing information about CIBA and CIBA Foundation at the races.  Consider hanging out with us at the tent to promote the club and watch the excitement!  If the sign up is full don't let that stop you we will make room :)

The Indiana State Fair is almost here!!!

CIBA will be supporting the bicycling community through our partnership with Pedal & Park for the 17th Year.  This is one of the most productive Pedal & Park events in which 2000+ bikes will be parked over 16 days! This will take place at Boulevard Station (38th and Monon Trail).  We have a number of shifts available for parking as well as set up and tear down.  In return for your help to support commuting by bicycle, vouchers for free entrance to the fair will be provided!
