War, romance, crime, adventure! Not your average bike trip

Love, War, and the Bicycle: Cycling the Balkans

January 15, 7 pm Central Library
willieIn 1996, Willie Weir left for a five month bicycle journey through the Balkans. International troops were stationed throughout Bosnia. Sniper barriers were still present in Sarajevo.  Albania had just opened up its borders to the world after over 60 years isolation. Willie knew it would be an exciting trip. He just didn't know it would change his life.

Come out for an evening of entertainment and inspiration.

The 9:00 am January 4th ride will begin/end at the City Market as it did last year. The first 200 to register online and show up for the ride will take home a free long sleeve t-shirt.

Don’t forget to show your support for the Mayor’s Neighborhood Investment Plan, which would invest as much as $350 million into much needed infrastructure projects that support connectivity around Marion County like sidewalks, bike amenities and trails! Check it out at www.indy.gov/eGov/City/DPW/RebuildIndy/Projects/Pages/Neighborhood-Investment-Plan.aspx, and leave your comments at the bottom of the page.

CIBAs Carbos & Caffeine Saturday Breakfast Ride (SBR) will change its start location in 2014, starting with the first official ride date of January 11.  Quaker Park is located at 17501 Dartown Road, which is directly behind the Public Safety Building on the south side of SR 32, approximately 1 mile west of US-31.

Quaker Park has good parking, public restrooms, a shelter house, and is adjacent to the Midland Trace Trail, which connects to the Monon Trail.  This provides great access when riding to the start of the SBR!

The SBR is held each Saturday, and starts at 9 AM October through March, and 8 AMApril through September.  The SBR is suspended for the NITE Ride and Hilly Hundred.  Temperatures below 25 degrees, steady rain or snow, or snow/ice on the road cancels the ride.

The SBR was established in April 2003 as a social, fun ride that includes a stop for breakfast and provides a variety of route options, so one can choose mileage based on ability, weather, or need.  Maps and Cue sheets are always available, and the Leader always ‘sweeps’, so those new to the group have someone to ride with, regardless of speed.

The Ride has developed good friendships over the years, starting with just a few riders, to groups of 35-50 during peak season.  Nearly every week we welcome riders new to group riding or new to the area.  With multiple speed groups and routes, the SBR offers options to suit any rider. But we concentrate on the “option” of having Fun and Meeting New Friends!

Please Note:  The SBR will be suspended January 4.  Please attend the Mayors 3rdAnnual Polar Bear Pedal at the City Market in Indianapolis.

Due to extreme cold 23 degrees at ride time and country roads with snow and ice we are canceling the Jolly Old t. Nick ride for Saturday, December 7.   If possible we will reschedule for a later date.  Maybe St. Nick in January.
